Language: English
Pages: 450
File Size: 2.13 MB
File Format: PDF
Category: Politics, Economy

For over forty years in more than sixty countries, Raymond Baker has
witnessed the free-market system operating illicitly and corruptly, with
devastating consequences. In Capitalism’s Achilles Heel, Baker
takes readers on a fascinating journey through the global free-market
system and reveals how dirty money, poverty, and inequality are
inextricably intertwined. Readers will discover how small illicit
transactions lead to massive illegalities and how staggering global
income disparities are worsened by the illegalities that permeate
international capitalism. Drawing on his experiences, Baker shows how
Western banks and businesses use secret transactions and ignore laws
while handling some $1 trillion in illicit proceeds each year. He also
illustrates how businesspeople, criminals, and kleptocrats perfect the
same techniques to shift funds and how these tactics negatively affect
individuals, institutions, and countries.
Colin Wilson tells the story of human violence from Peking Man to the Mafia - taking into account the calculated sadism of the Assyrians, the opportunism of the Greek pirates, the brutality that made Rome the 'razor king of the Mediterranean', the mindless destruction of the Vandals, the mass slaughter of Genghis Khan, Tamurlane, Ivan the Terrible, Vlad the Impaler and more. Each age has a unique characteristic pattern of crime. In the past three centuries crime has changed and evolved until the sex killer and the mass murderer have become symbols of all that is worst about our civilization. But this is not just a study in human depravity; it is an attempt to place crime in perspective against human discovery, exploration and invention. The result is a completely new approach to the history and psychology of human violence.

Yale historian Kennedy surveys the ebb and flow of power among the major
states of Europe from the 16th centurywhen Europe's preeminence first
took shapethrough and beyond the present era when great power status is
devolving again upon the extra-European states. Stressing the
interrelationships among economic wealth, technological innovation, and
the ability of states efficiently to tap their resources for prolonged
military preparedness and warmaking, he notes that those states with the
relatively greater ability to maintain a balance of military and
economic strength assumed the lead. Kennedy never reduces the analysis
to crude materialism or empty tautology. Stimulating, erudite, carefully
crafted, and readable; for public and academic libraries.
The book is a vigorous entry in the debate over the extent to which national wealth should be used for military purposes.
Edward Louis Bernays (November 22, 1891 – March 9, 1995), was an American pioneer in the field of public relations and propaganda along with Ivy Lee, referred to in his obituary as "the father of public relations". Combining the ideas of Gustave Le Bon and Wilfred Trotter on crowd psychology with the psychoanalytical ideas of his uncle, Dr. Sigmund Freud (The father of Psychology), Bernays was one of the first to attempt to manipulate public opinion using the subconscious.
He felt this manipulation was necessary in society, which he regarded as irrational and dangerous as a result of the 'herd instinct' that Trotter had described. Adam Curtis's award-winning 2002 documentary for the BBC, The Century of the Self, pinpoints Bernays as the originator of modern public relations, and Bernays was named one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century by Life magazine.
Propaganda is a 1928 book by Edward Bernays. It argued that the scientific manipulation of public opinion was necessary to overcome chaos and conflict in society:
The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. ...We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. ...In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons...who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.
Language: English
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) is a novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells the story of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit-hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar and anthropomorphic creatures.

The tale is filled with allusions to Dodgson's friends (and enemies), and to the lessons that British schoolchildren were expected to memorize. The tale plays with logic in ways that have given the story lasting popularity to adults as well as children. It is considered to be one of the most characteristic examples of the genre of literary nonsense, and its narrative course and structure has been enormously influential, mainly in the fantasy genre.

The book is commonly referred to by the abbreviated title Alice in Wonderland, an alternative title popularized by the numerous stage, film and television adaptations of the story produced over the years. Some printings of this title contain both Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There.
This feeling of completeness helps people transcend the anxieties that prevent them from finding focus and passion in their work. The exercises in the book, which largely involve visualization, meditation and conscious breathing, help readers realize that they are complete and worthwhile beings, no matter what their career situations.
The D/L method sets revised targets in rain-interrupted limited-overs cricket matches in accordance with the relative run scoring resources which are at the disposal of the two sides. It is generally accepted to be a fair and accurate method of setting a target score, but as it attempts to predict what would have happened had the game come to its natural conclusion, it generates some controversy. The D/L method was devised by two English statisticians, Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis.

Download / Read the Book

Duckworth and Lewis

Here is an online calculator for DL method:

http://www.duckworth-lewis.com/CalculatorforT20ODI/tabid/56/language/en-US/Default.aspx

Calculate the result of your rain affected matches and enjoy!

Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01152157573498184796noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6244497184909207722.post-15082096765700957992010-10-12T23:03:00.000-07:002010-10-12T23:03:48.168-07:00Hamoodur Rahman Commission Report (1971)The most important incident in the history of Pakistan was separation of East and West Pakistan.
The Hamoodur Rahman commission was constituted by Pakistan Government to investigate the Bangladesh atrocities during the Bangladesh Liberation War and the military and political causes of the country's defeat in the 1971 war. It was asked to investigate "the circumstances in which the Commander, Eastern command, surrendered and the members of the Armed Forces of Pakistan under his command laid down their arms and a cease-fire was ordered along the borders of West Pakistan and India and along the cease-fire line in the State of Jammu and Kashmir." The report was very critical of the role of Pakistan's military and politicians and its publication was disallowed at the time.
The findings of this report are now available to the world. Those interested in South Asia don't miss this one.

Exploring both the political and intellectual contexts within which Machiavelli's political vision was formed, Mikael Hornqvist stresses the classical and rhetorical character of Machiavelli's thought. He analyzes his preoccupation with glory and liberality in relation to the revival of Roman ideas of triumphalism. The result is a revealing account of the formation of Machiavelli's characteristic preoccupations.
